Oyo lawmakers task Makinde on insecurity

From Stella Obi, Ibadan

Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the executive arm under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde to put measures in place to curb the growing rate of insecurity in the state.

The House at its plenary on Tuesday, expressed concern over incessant criminal attacks in some areas of Ibadan metropolis and kidnappings in other parts of the state which the lawmakers blamed on the nefarious activities of suspected criminally minded herders in the state.

In a motion on “Stemming the spike of insecurity, killings, and kidnappings in the state via improved working synergy among security agencies” sponsored by Gabriel Babajide, representing Ibadan North 2,  the assembly hinted that the state of insecurity required some urgent and drastic measures by the executive arm.

A co sponsor of the motion, Isiaka Kazeem, representing Oyo East/ West said Oyo State was yet to test the strength of Oyo State Anti Open Grazing Law through effective implementation since the law came into existence in the state.

The House said the issue of herders / farmers clashes and destruction of farmlands by cattle would only be addressed if the atate government commences full implementation of anti-open hearing and grazing law already passed into law.

According to them, in line with the provision of the law, there is the need for the state government to establish Open Grazing Prohibition Task Force to implement and ensure full compliance with the law.

The House charged its Committee on Agriculture to liaise with the state government on the process of implementing the law, and the level of progress made on the applications of the anti-open hearing and grazing law.

In their remarks,  Akeem Adedibu (Iwajowa),  Sunkanmi Babalola (Egbeda) and member representing Ibarapa Central/North State Constituency,  Peter Ojedokun recounted their close encounters or that of their loved ones with the kidnappers and wondered why it was difficult and virtually impossible for security agents to track down the criminals who collect huge ransom from their victims and in some cases kill them.

The Deputy Speaker,  Muhammad Fadeyi, the Majority Leader,  Sanjo Adedoyin and the Minority Leader,  Asimiyu Alarape decried a situation where some criminals have taken over the forest reserves in the state, and called on Amotekun Corps and security agents to comb all the suspected hideouts of the criminals and other hotspots across the state.

The Speaker,  Adebo Ogundoyin, in his remarks, urged the state government to constitute an Anti Open Grazing Prohibition Task Force, comprising Commissioner for Agriculture, Special Adviser to the governor on Security, representatives of the Commission of Justice, Nigerian Police, and other security agencies as well as the Miyetti Allah Association.

Ogundoyin said the step would go a long way to urgently stem the spike in killings and kidnappings in the state.
