Trailer runs over police officer in Owerri

AN ARTICULATED lorry yesterday killed a policeman  when the driver ran over the cop who was on a stop-and-search duty along Owerri-Okigwe Expressway in Imo State.

Effort to find an official confirmation of whether the incident that occurred at Atta in Ikeduru Local Government Area was accidental or vengeful was unsuccessful. But there was palpable fear around the area amid heavy police presence at the scene creating traffic gridlock.

The lifeless body of the police officer was seen on the ground but armed police officers did not allow onlookers to come close, though it was not possible to ascertain if a trailer that stopped around the scene was the truck that ran over the  dead officer.
Although a motorist said the heavy-duty truck ran over the officer after its driver had been waved down, he added that the trailer was on a speed lane before ramming into the police officer who was on the road.

“A truck crushed him after he flagged it down and the driver refused to stop. The victim, who was on a stop-and-search duty with his colleagues, was on the main road. Other police officers went after the killer truck driver but I am not sure if they were able to get him. This is tragic,” he said.
Confirming the incident, police spokesperson in Imo State, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that the command was deeply mourning the officer’s death.
“We have just been told. I am just hearing it. Necessary action has been activated by the command. The command is saddened by the sad development,” Ikeokwu said.
