Hon Nigeria paints Christmas red for Awka market women

Many market women in Awka, capital of Anambra State are upbeat about Christmas and New Year.  A young politician, representing Awka Constituency 1 in Anambra State House of Assembly, Nigeria Henry Mbachu (Labour Party), is one of the main causes of their happiness.


Since the second week of December, the young politician has engaged in a tour of markets in the capital city of Anambra State. The tour is marked by the sharing of handouts and exchange of one-on-one handshakes between the legislator and owners of shops and stalls.



During one of such visits in Ukwu Oji Market, at Perm Site, Government House area, Awka, the legislator, dorning all-white was found savouring the songs and encomium of the market women who claimed his was a novel initiative.


The lawmaker gave out envelopes of cash. Some of the women disclosed that their envelopes contain up to as N10,000).  He also had individual chats and took photographs, individually with the excited women.


Hon. Nigeria, a mechanical engineer who is known for combining his legislative services with community service activities such as his regular pro-bono teaching of Physics at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, explained that the Christmas sharing initiative is his way of ensuring that the grassroots of his constituency also enjoy the Yuletide.




"I am not a money bag but I believe in standing with the people. Hence I ensure that I share the little I have suffice or reaches as many of us as possible. That thing you saw me doing in the markets is my way of saying 'thank you' and sharing. That is the spirit of the season."


The general warmth witnessed during the legislator's interactions with the market women capture the people's reception of the Hon. Nigeria's Yuletide charity.
