FENCE KILLS BOY AS TWO MINORS SURVIVE WATER TANK COLLAPSE IN DELTA
BY: CHIKE IFEDI, ASABA
It was a sad story for the Owolabi family, resident in Afiesere Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State as a fence collapsed on their son, Master Gbenga killing him instantly last Sunday.
The victim who finished writing his West African school certificate examination last week met his untimely death as he was returning from the hospital where he went to give food to his younger sister that was on admission for appendicitis operation during a down pour.
The fence wall housed a property belonging to the wife of a business magnate (name withheld) located in Damure Street, Afiesere.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that sympathizers who got there on time to rescue him could not do anything to save Gbenga's life as the impact of the fence wall on him was devastating.
Neighbors who were all in tears described young Gbenga as humble and respectful, saying that his death was unfortunate and a great loss to the family.
All efforts to confirm the story from the police public relations officer, DSP Onome Onomewakpoyeya proved abortive.
Meanwhile, a fire fighter Mr Ben Aladino and family members narrowly escaped death on
Monday in their apartment along Jude Okafor street Ogbosedi quarters,Okpanam near Asaba when an overhead water tank collapsed on their sitting room.
The children were said to be watching television in the sitting room while their father, a staff of the state fire service was at the bathroom when the tank fell at about 9am.
Narrating his ordeal to the Nigerian Tribune in Asaba on Tuesday, Mr Aladino said blocks of the damaged wall that would have hit the children were suspended miraculously.
While glorifying God for saving his two minors, Aladino quipped:
"It was God that saved them because they did not sustain any injury. It was the three-sitter cushion chair that got spoilt when the blocks that were supposed to land on them was suspended on top.
" I was in the bathing room and their mother went out to buy something when I heard a strong noise from the sitting room and i rush out to see if the children are okay of which God almighty did his work ,they are fine."
"I came out to see the damaged tank I saw my landlord looking at the damage tank of which I confronted him in respect of the incident he started quarreling with me that I should not talk to him because he is the landlord. As I speak to you the broken wall of the sitting room has not been fixed yet.
