PRESS STATEMENT: New dawn beckons as NULGE achieves parity for local government workers in Anambra State.

Negotiations on the new minimum wage and the consequential adjustments have come to a fruitful conclusion in Anambra State. Alas, labor unions through the joint negotiating council reached amicable resolutions with the Anambra State government paving the way for the commencement of a new minimum wage regime for public servants  in the state. The agreement also captured the motivational benefits of salary increments as the revenue of the state improves.

It is noteworthy that this phenomenal achievement is coming on the heels of the recent inauguration of the present executives of the Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of local Government Employees (NULGE), led by  the State President, Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe.

At the just concluded minimum wage Negotiations, we advocated and achieved better conditions for our colleagues, to the end that the days of disparity between public servants in Anambra State are gone. Hence, local government workers in Anambra will now enjoy same emolument with their counterparts at the State level.

With this development, our leadership has set a milestone in the annals of history. We have also taken a giant stride in line with our mandate and promise, on assumption of office, to reposition the union for the greater benefit of local government workers in  Anambra State.

While the minimum wage deliberations lasted, we noted with contentment the efforts of the Anambra State Government, labor unions and other stakeholders in ensuring peaceful negotiations. This, no doubt, serves as a postive indicator of greater industrial harmony in the state.

We, therefore, deeply appreciate his Excellency, Chief Sir Willie Obiano and the government's negotiation team led by The Secretary to the State Government, His honor Solo Chukwulobelu.

The Obiano led government deserves huge commendation for being the first administration in the state to engage in sincere minimum wage negotiation with labor unions towards improving workers' welfare. This could not have come at a better time than now with the Governor's recent investiture as a Knight Commander of the Pontifical Order of St Gregory the Great (KCSG) by Pope Francis at the Vatican in recognition of his continued support to the church. We heartily congratulate your excellency on this distinguished and very symbolic spiritual elevation.

Now that we are at the crux of history and positively so, may we also court governments attention towards addressing other festering  issues affecting Local government workers some of which predated this government. The issues include: many years of embargo on employment of new workers at the local governments, the need for periodic capacity building for greater productivity, Contributory pension Scheme, Lack of operational vehicles in some local governments amongst others.

We are optimistic that having scored a first with the history making new minimum wage negotiation, our worker friendly governor and his team of progressives will further address these issues so as to  optimize workers' welfare and performance.

NULGE, under the leadership of the State President, Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe supports the people oriented leadership of His Excellency, Chief Sir Willie Obiano. We shall continue to fulfill our part of the agreement by spurring our colleagues to greater productivity in order to achieve his excellency's transformational objectives in local government administration. We shall also assist government in identifying and plugging any existing leakage in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) generation at the Local government areas while promoting the already existing industrial harmony in the state.

We specially appreciate our esteemed colleagues, workers across the 21 Local governments of the state for the confidence reposed in our leadership to engage with State leadership towards improving our collective welfare.

We shall never relent in our drive to restore standards and raise the bar in local government administration  in our state and Country.

Indeed, for the Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of local Government Employees (NULGE), a new dawn beckons.

Signed
Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe
State President, NULGE, Anambra State Chapter
